Second Trimester Antenatal Appointment Guide

During the 40 weeks of pregnancy, there are regular appointments scheduled to ensure that both you and your baby are healthy and well and also to identify any potential issues or risks that may come up during the course of your pregnancy. Here's Everything you need to know for the Second Trimester.

16 Weeks

At this point you will visit your GP for routine checks on blood pressure, weight, he/she will check baby’s heartbeat, you will give a urine sample and the doctor will check the growth of your womb. It will be another while before you see the GP again. However, you should never feel you can’t visit the GP if you have questions or worries about anything.

20 Weeks

Congratulations, you are half way there! You will return to the hospital for an anomaly/wellbeing scan which is basically a more detailed scan where the take measurements of baby’s bones, head circumference, organs and your placenta to ensure everything is growing at the expected rate.

24 Weeks

Generally speaking, for subsequent pregnancies, you are brought back to see your GP for the usual checks. However, many first-time mothers may be brought back to the hospital at this stage for an extra check. This is usually done because there is no pregnancy history to refer to and so they keep a bit of a closer eye to make sure all is going according to plan.
