12 Weeks Pregnant
At 12 weeks, your baby’s face is beginning to take shape, and is looking more and more like a ‘real’ baby. Muscles are starting to become visible on the body, and limb movements are stronger.
Your baby’s brain is now able to tell their muscles what to do. Your baby’s joints can now contract, and their toes will curl and your baby can now suck their thumb. Your baby’s fingers and toes are fully formed and have nails.
By now, the symptoms of pregnancy sickness may have eased off or disappeared, although in some women they can persist throughout their pregnancy. If you have to vomit often (a rule of thumb is three consecutive days) you may not be getting the nutrients your body and your baby need and, if you are losing weight rather than gaining it, definitely discuss this with your health care professional.
To ensure a pregnancy is healthy and a baby is developing normally, ultrasound is used. If there is a suspicion of a problem, other tests such as Nuchal Translucency can be performed. Read our article on what screening tests are available here.
