My Premature Birth Story: Our Miracle Baby
Though we all dream of having the panic-free birth we’ve hoped for throughout pregnancy, sometimes it doesn’t quite go to plan; and some little ones have to join the world ahead of schedule. Dana Brӧske shares the story of her son Jason’s early entrance to the world.
Up until week 32 my pregnancy was a normal one. My husband and I then went to my routine check and there they noticed that I had very high blood pressure and they found protein in my urine. We were told that I had all the signs of pre-eclampsia and that I had to stay in hospital right now up until my baby was born.

I was devastated. I feared for my unborn baby just as much as I feared the time alone in the hospital. My husband was trying to soothe me, telling me that everything would be fine and this is for the best, that they just wanted to keep an eye on me. But I couldn’t quite grasp all of it back then.
Once I got to my room I felt a bit better. The tears had subsided and the midwives were all very nice to me. I was what they called a ‘long-term stay.’ I was given medication to treat the blood pressure and they checked the baby’s heartbeat three times a day.
On the second day in the hospital I went to have a scan and they told me that my waters were not on the level they are supposed to be but so far there was nothing to worry about and the baby wriggled happily in my tummy. I was hoping I would be released soon and that I could have a normal delivery when my little boy was due (we knew it was a boy). But life had other plans.

On my sixth day in hospital I went for another scan and my waters had been going down some more and they had almost reached a critical level. And the baby hadn’t moved all morning, so this time not only the doctors were worried, but I was as well. At lunchtime the doctor came to me and told me that I need to have an emergency c-section because they didn’t want to risk losing the baby if they waited any longer. I was in week 33 of my pregnancy.
Nervously I called my husband and when he came we hugged for a long time. I was taken down to the delivery ward. An hour and a half later my baby was born. My husband went with the nurses who took our baby away to check all his vitals and even though I didn’t get to see him when he was born, I heard his cries and I knew he was okay, that everything would be fine. He was taken to the Special Care Ward for Infants since he was only 3lbs and had to stay in an incubator. I got to see him before I was wheeled back up to my room.
