What Are The Most Popular Baby Names Right Now?

When brainstorming baby names, do you prefer the classics, or do you want to go for something a bit different? In the latest survey of the most popular names in Ireland, James hits the top spot for most popular boys' name (overtaking Jack, which is now in second place,) while Emily is still the most popular girls' name for the sixth year in a row; with Grace in second place.

But trends are changing, with celebrity culture and what we watch playing a part in which names we prefer; shown in the growth in popularity for girls' names like Harper, Heidi, Matilda, Willow, and Zoey in recent years.

For boys' names, Louis, Lucas, Jason, Josh, Ollie, and Muhammad have grown most in popularity, with Muhammad jumping 36 places up the ranks since 2015.

How do tastes differ across the country?

Well, James is the most popular boys' name in Dublin, Charlie in Cork City and Daniel in Waterford City.

Meanwhile, Amelia earned the top spot in Dublin City and Cork City, while Mia was the most popular girls' name in Waterford City. In Galway, Fiadh was the most popular name for newborn girls.

What difference does nationality make?

Where both parents were Irish, Jack was the most popular name for boys and Grace the most popular for girls. If both parents were UK nationals, Finn and Isaac were the joint most popular for boys; and Aria and Emily shared the top spot for girls, which suggests just how many Game of Thrones fans there are out there!

Want to stand out?

If you're looking for something a bit further down the list, so your baby won't share his/her name with too many other children in class when they start school; less popular boys' names include Anton, Brodie, Cruz, Harris and Feilim, and less popular girls’ names included Blake, Indigo, Lucia, Reidin, Romy and Peyton.

And which surnames were registered the most, for newborns in 2016? Murphy, Kelly, O’Brien, Ryan and Walsh!

Is your child's name amongst the most popular for 2016? And what do you think of your own name? We'd love to hear.
