Lucy and Thomas Top The Irish Times Baby Names List 2014
Lucy and Thomas were the most popular baby names in The Irish Times’ birth announcements column last year, where the births of more than 400 babies were announced, including more than 10 sets of twins.
Thomas beat other favourites Conor, Matthew, Harry, Max and William to the top spot, while Lucy proved to be more popular than Sophia, Charlotte, Eva, Emma and Ella in the newspaper’s birth announcements.
It was interesting to see the trend for more traditional baby names, which reappeared in the birth announcements, including Nora, Nuala, Margaret, Mary, Paddy, Sean and Joseph. The number of modern and unusual names dipped, however eclectic gems like Persephone, Cuisle and Eulalia (as a middle name) for girls and Tuan, Eden and Jarun for boys did make the list.
The Central Statistics Office have yet to publish the official list of Ireland’s top baby names in 2013, however, the results for 2012 and 2011 showed Jack and Emily in the top spots.
