The Mental Load

This cartoon is going viral and it’s no wonder.

Do you split the household chores 50/50 with your partner? Are you sure? This cartoon called ‘You should have asked’ by Emma has been going viral as hundreds of thousands of women around the globe realise that, actually, there’s a whole other set of invisible tasks that we almost always unwittingly take on.

It’s called The Mental Load. And it’s all those things that we have to remember and organise each day in order to keep the household and family running.

It’s birthday parties and teachers gifts, it’s dentist appointments and meal planning, it’s pet food and homework and everything else that goes into running a busy family.

Sound familiar?

And yes, of course many, many partners are willing to roll up their sleeves and help, but should they be ‘helping’ us? Should we not be helping each other?

It’s something many couples may not have thought or talked about until now, but it’s certainly an interesting discussion to start.
