Making the Most of 'Me' Time
Have a rare day (or even an hour!) to yourself? Make sure to spend it wisely!
Here are just a few suggestions of ways to enjoy your time off.
Go for a walk – all on your own
Take in the fresh air, looking all around you. When you’re normally out and about, the distractions of children – whether it’s keeping them safe or fetching them a drink or wrapping them up – usually keeps you from noticing the fine weather, green grass or warm sun. So enjoy it.
Run a hot bath
Ahhhh, a bathroom all to yourself and no one’s there asking for things. Chuck out the bath toys, light a scented candle, put on some music, read your book or just close your eyes and relax. Bliss.
Read a good book
A good book can take some time to really get into, so use this opportunity to start that book you’ve been meaning to read. Curl up on the couch, in bed, or out in the sunshine and enjoy the quiet.
Have some girl time
If you haven't had a chance to catch up with your friends in a while, now's the time to do it with a coffee, lunch or cocktail date.
And no, not for something for the kids or to the supermarket. Try on a dress, a new pair of jeans, some fantastically impractical shoes or browse lovely homewares – whatever you never have time to do when little ones are making a trip to the shops a stressful event rather than a pleasant experience.
Go for breakfast in your favourite café
My favourite hideaway has a girlie gift shop next door and a roaring fire – and they never kick you out, so when I retreat there I have time to pore over the papers, sip my coffee slowly and enjoy every morsel of my brunch.
Stick on your iPod and dance in your living room
Why not? No one’s watching!
Go to the cinema in the middle of the day
Pick up some of your favourite indulgent snacks and a ticket to see a movie of your choosing – not the latest Disney flick that the kids wanted to go to, not an action blockbuster that your partner would love to see, just something for you.
Have a pamper party for one
One thing a mom never gets enough time for is herself – so this is the perfect opportunity to indulge in nothing but pampering yourself. Perhaps it will be a trip to the beautician's for some much-deserved treatments, or maybe you would prefer some relaxing time at home. Body scrubs, deliciously scented moisturisers, a face mask, a new nail varnish...you can make it as involved as you like, as long as you enjoy it.
Print off photographs and pop them into frames and albums
You’ve been meaning to do this since the baby was born – now’s as good a time as any. That is, unless this is your idea of work, in which case you have my permission to put it off further. After all, this is your day, and it doesn’t come often!
What do you love to do when you get some time to yourself?
