How Do Your Emotions Affect Your Health?

As humans, we are emotionally driven, and also tested, every single day of our lives.

Especially with the introduction of social media, where we are exposed to an overwhelming amount of content which provokes feelings of happiness, sadness, grief, joy, hope... sometimes all within the one breath. Some of us feel the not-so-nice emotions more frequently than others. Those of us who suffer from mental health issues, such as anxiety, depression, bi-polar disorder - just to name a few - understand the impact that these intense feelings have on our daily lives.

But for those not in the know, how do overwhelming emotions impact the physical body and health? The body knows when something isn't quite right. When we are stressed, anxious or upset, the body acknowledges this and we see it reflected in a physical form. Here are some examples of symptoms which might suggest your mental and emotional health needs some TLC:

  • Back pain
  • Loss of appetite
  • Chest pain
  • Constipation or diarrhea
  • Upset stomach
  • General aches and pains
  • Weight gain or loss
  • Headaches
  • High blood pressure
  • Dry mouth
  • Extreme tiredness
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Dizziness
  • Palpitations
  • Loss of Libido
  • Shortness of breath
  • Stiff neck
  • Sweating

It's really important to note that all of the above may also be symptoms of another illness, so always check with your doctor. You may find it a bit odd to speak to your doctor about your feelings and emotional health, but there is no need. It's an important habit to get in to. Your doctor may not always be able to spot when you are feeling stressed or anxious, so tell them.

It’s important to be honest with your doctor so they can give you the help and treatment you require. If your negative feelings don’t go away on their own and are having such an impact that they're keeping you from enjoying life, it’s especially important for you to talk to your doctor.
