12 Ways To Slim Without Hitting The Gym
Hitting up the gym isn't always possible for busy moms. Slim down, tone up and get fit with our 12 easy ways to work out at home.
How to ‘lose weight fast’ is one of the most searched terms on Google; however, there really is no quick-fix solution. Losing weight requires a healthy, balanced diet and a committed approach to sustainable exercise. As time is often of the essence for mothers, here are some ideas on how to incorporate exercise into a busy schedule.
Go for a walk
Walking is the most basic form of exercise, and according to experts, it is the best way for people to lose weight and keep it off. To mix things up, bring a pedometer to count your steps and track your progress, or invest in wrist and ankle weights for added impact.
Set yourself a goal
Many people find that setting themselves a goal gives them something to work towards. Whether that is a particular amount of weight loss, a speedier run around your regular course, or training for a charity event, such as a mini-marathon, working towards your goal helps to build momentum and a sense of accomplishment.
Try a mom and baby class
Classes take place nationwide that offer swimming, dancing, yoga and general fitness to moms and their babies. These are also a great place to meet other moms and save you searching for a babysitter. Keep an eye out for events in your local park too, where you can join groups of moms for a walk and exercise using your baby's buggy as part of the workout.
By blogging about your fitness story, you can connect with like-minded people online and find support, inspiration and tips. Sharing your progress online is also a great way to stay motivated.
Work out at home
Look at workout DVDs that you can do while your baby naps – or pop the baby in a bouncer chair or on the floor, then entertain them with your aerobics! Toddlers may even look to join in... At home options also include things like Wii Fit or Xbox Kinnect, running up and down the stairs, dancing without a care in the world, or doing yoga and pilates in your living room (there are lots of good YouTube or online resources for learning the basics).
Download a fitness app
There is a wide range of fitness apps available to choose from, at a range of prices. Start with something like the free iPhone NIKE Training Club App that offers 60 custom built 15, 30 and 45-minute workouts.
Cycling is an excellent workout and is also good for your heart, muscles and coordination. Invest in a seat for your baby and feel the benefits of extra core work due to the increased weight.
Have fun with the kids
Did you know 15 minutes of hula hooping burns off up to 100 calories and works out the abs? Playing football in the garden, frisbee on the beach, going for a bike ride, or jumping on the trampoline will all help – and they're lots of fun too!
Make the most of the playground
If your little one is big enough to enjoy the playground, make the most of the opportunity. Run around playing 'chase', carry them for piggy backs, push them on the swings, get some cardio in with hopscotch – there are lots of creative ways to get your heart pumping!
Ramp up the speed
If you have minimal time on your hands to exercise, don’t despair. Quick workouts can be effective and beneficial; sprinting is the best fat-burning exercise you can do. Go for a quick jog for 20 minutes and add a few 30 second sprints to feel the burn.
Try a class
Local venues, such as a parish centre or community school, will hold an array of interesting exercise classes. From salsa to zumba or belly dancing to boxercise, there are lots of alternative ways to burn calories, boost your fitness levels and lose weight.
Make a walking date
Instead of trying to fit in a quick phone catch-up with your friends, set up a weekly walking date to burn calories and chat at the same time.
