7 Tips for Treating a Common Cold
1. Stay rested
One of the most important things you can do for yourself when struck down with a cold is to rest. Resting when you first come down with a cold helps your body direct its energy toward the immune battle. The common cold can be taxing on the body, so rest up.
Gargling can moisten a sore throat and bring temporary relief. Try a teaspoon of salt dissolved in warm water, four times daily. Or another option is a thicker gargle, made with honey. Steep one tablespoon of lemon juice in hot water and mix in one teaspoon of honey. Let the mixture cool to room temperature before gargling. Honey should never be given to children under age the age of 1.
3. Drink hot liquids
Hot liquids relieve nasal congestion, help prevent dehydration, and soothe the uncomfortably inflamed membranes that line your nose and throat.
4. Take a hot shower
A hot shower will moisturise your nasal passages and relax you. This will help you clear your blocked nose and relieve headache causing congestion.
5. Blow your nose often
Blowing your nose regularly is really important when you have a cold. Rather than sniffling mucus back into your head, it's important to get rid of it by blowing your nose properly. To clear mucus properly and safely, press a finger over one nostril while you blow gently to clear the other. Wash your hands after blowing your nose.
