Returning To Work After Maternity Leave | Mom Stories
Returning to work after being on maternity leave is not an easy step to take for any mom. Some moms returning to work wish to reduce their work hours or even go part-time so they can spend more time with their little ones.
Unfortunately, not all work environments are family friendly or are open for change. One of the moms our Facebook page recently got in touch with the following:
"I’ve asked if I could cut a few hours off my work day as I work long hours, but my boss said no, and then he put me on late shifts"
Many of our moms got in touch to share their own stories of returning to work, plus some advice on what to do in this situation.
"Try to sit down with your boss and express your wishes to change your working hours" (Mike Finnerty)
With young children, it is certain that as a parent you are going to need some flexibility to attend different commitments, such as medical appointments, parent-teacher meetings, sports day or other special occasions.
"Us mothers need to stick together and luckily most employers are flexible" (Deirdre Costelloe)
When you need to bring your baby to immunization appointments and any other development check-ups along the way, always ask for a letter from your local nurse or doctor explaining your absence from work.
"My company totally adjusted for me when I went back to work after have my baby" (Isobel Hannan)
But in some cases, your request to change working hours may not be successful and for sure you want to be in a workplace where you feel valued and happy.
"You will never get this time back with your baby and you don’t want to be stressing out or upsetting yourself for a job" (Siobhan Mulligan)
There are plenty of companies on the market that value working mothers, and that are flexible regarding family commitments. When raising a family you will definitely need a job suited to your needs.
