3 Fantastic Halloween Family Break Ideas

5m Halloween Darkness Walk - 29th October. You are invited to join the 5km Halloween Darkness Walk up the 12 O’clock Hills indulging in a chocolate treat along the way. Check out their Facebook page.

Spooky Halloween at Moher Hill Open Farm - 29th October. This is the time of year when the witches and ghouls descend on Moher Hill Farm! With ‘Padini’ The Great Magician, traditional Halloween fun and games and face-painting, Halloween at the farm is sure to scare the bravest! More info.

2. Explore Irelands Ancient East in Kilkenny 

Steeped in history and culture Kilkenny city and county is a great place to base yourself to explore Ireland Ancient East with the family. If you are staying in the city, leave the car at the hotel, as you will discover so much more on foot and there is something interesting around every corner to keep the kids happy. 

Kilkenny Castle
Top of your list should be the historic Kilkenny Castle, dating back to the 12th Century, the castle has been remodelled and restored and is set in 1830's splendour. It has extensive parklands around it to enjoy, which features a playground and you can also enjoy their art gallery. Plus, if you are visiting on the 1st Wednesday of any month all OPW sites are free to all and this includes Kilkenny Castle. Every Saturday Kilkenny Castle plays host to the local 5km Park Run, where everyone is welcome, meeting every at 9:30 am at Castle Park, Kilkenny. After the run, everyone is invited to grab a post park run coffee in Café Nostalgia in Kilkenny Castle Kitchen. 

National Reptile Zoo

A short drive away in Gowran is the National Reptile Zoo, which is bound to be a hit with the kids. Open 10 am to 6 pm each day you can enjoy over 50 exhibits in their Animal Encounter Zone and Tropical Walk-through Habitat. More info.

ScareFest Halloween Festival

Shankill Castle gets all the skeletons out of the closet this Halloween for ScareFest, a Halloween festival with ghost tours and family events. The ghost tours are night-time and candle-lit if you are feeling brave. More info.

Savour Kilkenny Festival of Food 2017 

From the 27th to the 30th October. The festival is now in its 11th year and is one of Ireland's favourite food festivals. The programme this year is packed full and sees the return of the popular Savour Village – a food haven with lots of delicious samples to savour, food demos, workshops, and unique dining experiences. 3. Discover Cork City

For a family Getaway, Cork City has so much to offer, with a great friendliness to the city, you will return time and time again. Top of the list in Corks most visited places is the English Market, established in 1788, this roof topped market has played host to many famous faces over the years but most famously was Queen Elizabeth when she visited in 2011 and was won over by the Cork charm!

For a very different experience, you can enjoy ringing the Shandon Bells from the first floor. These 18th-century bells in the Belfry are world famous and ring out across the city. Learn about the internal workings of the clocks, known as the “Four-Faced Liar”. Top tip, have your comfortable shoes or trainers on as you can climb 132 steps and enjoy a spectacular 360 view of Cork city during your visit.
Keep the culture vibe going and pop over to nearby Cobh which boasts an amazing harbour. This coastal town is steeped in history, of the 6 million people who emigrated from Ireland between 1848 and 1950 almost 2.5 million of them left from Cobh. At the Cobh Heritage Centre, you can trace your ancestors, learn about the ill-fated Titanic and Lusitania, both of whom stopped at Cobh. The towns restored Victorian railway station is home to the cultural centre, a building with its own historic story, Cobh – The Queenstown Story.

Halloween @ Cork City Gaol

30th October - 3rd November. This magnificent building once housed 19th-century prisoners. Kids are welcome to come in their fancy dress and enjoy the Black Cat Treasure Hunt, face painting, balloon making and story-telling. More info.

Guinness Jazz Festival

27th October to 30th October. Cork’s most renowned festival celebrates its 40th birthday and there are so many great musicians to enjoy. Although many parts of the festival come alive at night you can enjoy some amazing music throughout the day in the city and there is a full schedule of daytime gigs. More info.
