5 Great Family Events To Enjoy This Month

For any parent going crazy with repeated sighs of “I’m bored,” we’re here to help! It’s not easy to keep coming up with ideas for fun activities for the kids that the whole family will enjoy, but the festival organisers of Ireland are working hard to keep you inspired this summer.

Here are some suggestions on where to go and what to do to keep your sanity in the next fortnight:

Enniscrone Black Pig Festival

Venue: Enniscrone, Co. Sligo

The ever popular Black Pig Festival returns to Enniscrone for a great fun weekend in Sligo. This friendly seaside town comes alive with a daily funfair, music, and beachside cinema, plus a skydiving spectacular, Market Day with dedicated food tents, and yoga on the beach. It’s got pig in the title, so expect lots of piggy fun, with a Kiddies’ Piggy Picnic and Micro Pigs, and plenty of other entertainment to keep everyone in high spirits.

Boyle Arts Festival

Some arts festivals are not too welcoming for families, but the Boyle Arts Festival is different. This annual celebration of music, arts and culture is set in the beautiful town of Boyle, Co. Roscommon from July 19th to 28th. Younger members of the family will love the storytelling, cinema, and workshops, and all the family will embrace the music, theatre and visual arts.

Birr Vintage Week & Arts Festival

Venue: Birr, Co. Offaly
Date: August 3rd to 12th

The 50th Annual Birr Vintage Week & Arts Festival marries the best of vintage and contemporary culture with an all-inclusive programme that opens with a fabulous display of vintage, equestrian and community entries. There will be free children’s events, live music and entertainment, the Ormand Flying Club's Annual Fly-In and display, and a spectacular fireworks celebration. You and your family are sure to enjoy such a varied programme in this beautiful Georgian setting.

Enniscorthy Rockin’ Food Festival

After a wonderful debut last year, the Enniscorthy Rockin’ Food Festival is back and even better this year. The town of Enniscorthy will be even livelier than usual this August bank holiday weekend, with an impressive array of chefs and special guests in the free food marquee, a great range of free live music gigs all weekend, craft food and beer markets, outdoor film screenings, workshops, classes, and demonstrations. There will be plenty for younger attendees, including a Lego camp, medieval shield and sword making, chocolate camp, and kids’ cupcakes demonstration.

Seafront Funfair

Venue: Bray, Co. Wicklow
Date: 21st July – 6th August

Step right up for Bray’s annual extravaganza at the seaside. The Bray Seafront Fun Fair is the ideal traditional family day out, with bumper cars and candy floss, dips in the sea and popular fair games and rides. The Summer Special returns for 2018: Any ten rides are just €15 (exclusions apply, and these tickets are available to buy from the box office on site only).

Please note: The funfair will not be open on Monday 30th & Tuesday 31st July.
