5 Fun Family Friendly Events In November

With Halloween behind us, the advertising world has decided that Christmas has arrived. Give yourself some breathing space before the season starts and take some time out with the family. Here are some events around the country that you can enjoy together before it gets too hectic:

1. Cork Film Festival

There’s nothing like curling up in front of a good film together as a family. You’ll have a great selection to choose from at the Cork Film Festival, Ireland’s oldest film festival. The organisers have put together an imaginative selection of some 200 movies, with selections to suit children and adults of all tastes and ages. Highlights for families include the star-studded opening gala, a biopic of Charles Dickens called The Man Who Invented Christmas, and the animated delight, We’re Going on a Bear Hunt, which also features interactive storytelling before the feature.

2. Wild Lights at Dublin Zoo

See Dublin Zoo in a whole new light after sunset. Wild Lights is a spectacular light show designed to showcase the wonderful animals that call Dublin Zoo home. Your kids will be thrilled to see their favourite animals against a backdrop of huge illuminated sculptures and magical silk lanterns. Watch skilled Chinese artists perform their act and then relax with delicious treats at the Chinese craft market.

3. Yarn Family Storytelling Festival

Venue: Killruddery House & Gardens, Wicklow

Cosy up by the fire for a yarn or two in the atmospheric setting of Killruddery House. There are two sessions, one on November 18th with Liz Weir that is suitable for kids over four years, and the second on November 25th with Joe Brennan is perfect for the over fives. Both are free to all, but space is allocated on a first come, first served basis.

4. Science Week Family Event Programme

Venue: Nationwide
Dates: November 12th – November 19th

Science Week brings science alive for scientists and non-scientists of all ages. Get excited by how things work and delve into this year’s programme. Highlights for families in 2017 include Discovery Day at St Mel's College in Longford on November 11th, Sunday Fundays at Galway Atlantaquaria and Lismore Heritage Centre on November 12th, and Science and the Circus at the Drumavaddy Community Centre on the same day. 5. Games Expo Ireland

If you have a gamer in your house, you won’t be able to keep them away from Ireland’s premier gaming event, Games Expo Ireland. Not only will they be able to explore some of the most state-of-the-art games technology, they could also meet some of their favourite game designers. Mingle with the actors who voice familiar characters, venture into exciting worlds in the VR zone, and take a selfie with the 40-foot gaming truck.
