5 Fantastic Family Events In Ireland This Month!

Festivals and fun events are springing up across the country like new buds in the garden, so take a look and see if any of these take your fancy.

1. Kilkenny Animated

Oscar-nominated Cartoon Saloon takes you into the magical world of visual storytelling with Kilkenny Animated. The locally based animation studio has arranged an incredible array of speakers and activities for this brand new event, with some of the world's leading animators, cartoonists and illustrators all lined up for what’s looking like a wonderful weekend. Enjoy screenings, exhibitions, and workshops for adults and children, as well as comedy, dance, and live graffiti. Inspire your budding animator.

2. Dublin International Film Festival – Flix Programme for Kids & Families

Flix returns to the Audi Dublin International Film Festival this year with a fantastic selection of films for younger family members, as well as a special visit by children’s author Jacqueline Wilson. Highlights include a special festival preview of The LEGO® Batman Movie. There will be plenty to entertain children from 4 to 16 years of age, including international films, workshops, and special events.  

3. The Limerick Spring

A festival of politics and ideas might not sound like the ideal way to spend a weekend with the family, but the Limerick Spring is ready to inspire you with projects, ideas and citizens that are spearheading the future and showing people of all ages what is possible. “Future Planners – Kids Redesign Limerick City” on February 24th sounds fascinating: Kids take up the challenge of reimagining Limerick City. Let’s see what they come up with! 

4. Irish Orienteering Family Days in Cork

Venue: Rochestown Wood (18th), Fota Island Resort (25th), Deerpark Wood (March 4th)

Ever wondered about orienteering but didn’t know how to get started? Here’s your chance! Orienteering may be a competitive international sport but it always has room for beginners, and family days are a constant feature of the fixtures calendar. Running and navigation combine in a timed race using special, detailed maps to navigate varied terrain and find a series of control points These are timed races, but you can take it at your own pace. Most orienteering events involve running in woods and open mountain areas,

5. Winter Woolly Walks

 Venue: Various Northern Ireland locations
Dates: February 17th and 24th; 10am to 3pm
Cost: £2 per child; £5 per adult

Wrap up against the cold and make a move for cancer by taking a walk at any of seven beautiful locations across Northern Ireland. The February 24th walks take place in Drum Manor Forest Park, Cookstown; Portstewart Strand, Portstewart; Sir Thomas & Lady Dixon Park, Belfast, and Antrim Castle Gardens, The walks range from two to four miles and raise money for local children diagnosed with cancer. Registration is from 10am, with refreshments and family events following the walk.
