What Do I Need In A First Aid Kit?

Being a parent really requires a number of roles - carer, teacher, motivational speaker, (Father Christmas), boss, cleaner, and of course, nurse. So are you comfortable that you know what to do when those minor mishaps happen, and your first aid knowledge is required? Niamh O'Reilly from thenursery.ie is here with a few pointers:

Do you have a first aid kit in your house? Would you know what to do if your little one falls and knocks out a tooth?

Handy First Aid Kit

Most of us have the bare bones of a first aid box in our homes and we can get by but I think with kids, it’s a good idea to have a more organised box of tricks that you can grab when you need it. Of course, scarves can replace bandages and frozen peas could replace ice packs, but pieces like sterile dressings are really handy to have. As are eye patches, disposable gloves and sterile wipes.

If I was putting together a First Aid Kit for the house, this is what I would be getting my hands on:

  • Watertight box
  • Adhesive plasters assorted sizes
  • Sterile dressings
  • Sterile eye pads
  • 2 triangular bandages (slings)
  • Safety pins – Use tape for young children
  • Disposable gloves.
  • Thermometer
  • Instant cold packs – or packet of frozen peas
  • Scissors
  • Non-alcohol wound cleansing wipes
  • Adhesive tape

You can pick up most of these things in your local chemist and make your own first aid box by popping them in an airtight sandwich box and they will last for ages there. But remember to keep an eye on the “use by” dates. Like most things, they do have a shelf life!

Make two kits as it’s always a good idea to have a mini version in the car. You never know when you might need something handy! Plus you might need a few extra bits your kids are allowed to play with, so supplies don't get too depleted while your little ones play doctors and nurses.
