Are You Ready For Family Adventure In 2018?
When you think of holidays, do you head straight to the airport? There’s so much to see without going abroad, and it’s never too early to start exploring.
With the new year kicking off, it’s time to celebrate what’s right on your doorstep. So why not pack up the car, and explore the Island of Ireland with the whole family? There’s an adventure out there for everyone.
Beside the seaside
What’s the point in living on an Island if you don’t take the time to marvel at the amazing Seas, Oceans and Lakes that surround us? You don’t have to wait till summer to enjoy it, so put those Welly Boots in the boot of your car, and have a blustery walk, chase the waves (and try not to get your feet wet as you dash back up the beach), fly a kite, or warm up with some local fish and chips.
Bring history to life
Oh, what a history we have in Ireland! It can be discovered in the incredible museums across the country, in some of our historic buildings that have seen a lot in their time (as the bullet holes in the GPO demonstrate), and simply by keeping your eyes peeled as you drive around. There are endless stories in the ruins of houses, castles, or even the ‘jumping wall’ in Millockstown, Co. Louth, that remains standing despite moving over two foot away from its foundations!
For a small island, there is an incredible variety of landscapes to explore across the country, so there’s something to suit every age or fitness level. Explore the rugged wilderness of the Burren, visit the JFK Arboretum in Wexford, marvel at the Torc Waterfall in Killarney, or look out for spring flowers as they blossom in the Powerscourt Gardens. There are so many options across the country, whether you’re throwing on your jackets and popping down the road, or going on an activity holiday in a different county.
It’s the journey, not just the destination
There’s wildlife all over Ireland, and an amazing amount can be spotted by the family while driving! Look out for birds of prey hunting high above (in Glenveagh Co.Donegal you might even see a Golden Eagle!) Spot rabbits and pheasants dashing into the undergrowth, watch out for the sheep grazing near the road on Achill Island, or collect ‘Pony points’ by having a competition to see how many horses, and cows you can count in the passing fields.
You may have heard the saying ‘go big or go home’, but going on an adventure doesn’t have to involve nights away from home, or driving from one side of the country to the other (unless you want to!) There are many sights to see not far from wherever you live, if you just take the time to explore them. You don’t even need a detailed plan – why not go somewhere you’ve never been before, even if it’s just to enjoy a rainy picnic in the car (complete with a flask of tea) and some jumping in puddles?
You have the inspiration ...
