8 Ways to Pamper Mom on Mother’s day
MOTHER'S DAY: At last, that singular day of the year (birthdays excepted) where mammies the length and breadth of Ireland may at last relax and be pampered.
Bryony Sutherland shares some fun ways to make the day memorable for both of you.
1. Deliver breakfast in bed
All moms deserve a lie in on Mother’s Day, so tell yours not to get up – you’ll be round to put the kettle on. Prepare a breakfast tray with all her favourite treats; forego the toast and cereal for once and explore something a little more decadent, like croissants with jam or marmalade, pain au chocolat or strawberries with fresh cream. Alternatively, if your mom has a soft spot for a fry up, indulge her with bacon and eggs – just make sure to prop up her tray carefully and perhaps open the bedroom windows afterwards!
2. Make her a meaningful card
Anyone can pop into the local newsagent and buy a generic Mother’s Day card featuring impersonal verse and cheesy artwork. Why not give her a handmade card this year instead? Rediscover your inner child by experimenting with art supplies sourced at your local craft shop, or alternatively use an online card-printing service to personalise a card with a favourite photograph.
3. Give her a day off
Just for today, tell your mom you’re going to spoil her by doing all the household chores while she gets to unwind on the sofa. If you’re handy with a screwdriver, then fix any awkward little jobs she’s been putting off for ages. Otherwise wash her car, clear out a cupboard, or even just do a spot of cleaning for her.
4. Indulge her sweet tooth
Whether it’s a posh box of chocolates, some homemade cookies or a beautifully wrapped jar of her favourite childhood sweets, treat your mom and reassure her that today is not the day for dieting!
5. Give her a day off cooking
Take your mom to lunch or dinner at a favoured haunt, or try somewhere new to tickle her taste buds. Keep an eye on your local pubs or restaurants on the lead up to Mother’s Day; many will be offering attractive discounts where moms get to eat for free. Whether it’s surprise fine dining or pies at her local, she’ll not only thank you for feeding her, but for not having to do the washing up afterwards!
6. Spa therapy
If booking into a spa for some hands-on TLC is beyond your budget, what about recreating a spa day at home? Paint her nails, try a hair treatment and or gift her some lovely scented moisturiser – it will leave mom feeling a million dollars.
7. Plan a day out
Unless your mom has rather pointedly told you she wants to spend the entire day sofa-bound and catching up on her favourite soaps, surprise her with a wonderful day out for just the two of you. It doesn’t need to be expensive, you can simply go for a walk in a park, maybe pack a picnic, or instead visit a museum or art exhibition. Shopping sprees are another fun way of strengthening maternal bonds (any excuse!)...
8. And finally…
Don’t forget to tell her you love her!
