Do You Really Know How Much Protein Your Child Needs?

Well, according to some recent research by Dubliner Cheese, over half of parents don't actually know how much protein their little ones should be getting.

58% of parents surveyed had not done their homework when it comes to knowing how much protein their child needs on a daily basis. According to the National Dairy Council, the recommended daily intake of protein for children is .66g per kilo of body weight. Current science tells us that it is important to get a consistent amount of protein in our diet across the day, to help build and repair tissue, and for healthy hair and nails. Consuming most of your protein needs at one meal is not ideal, as it is not utilised efficiently by the body.

When asked what parents include in their child’s lunch box as a source of protein, 70% of parents revealed that cheese is the number one choice, with ham and yogurt coming in as runners up.

Choosing a lighter cheese with a reduced fat content is an excellent source of both protein and calcium, making it an ideal choice for growing children and teenagers. Almost one third of their RDA of calcium can be found in one 20g slice or in a matchbox size cut from the block.

What is the biggest priority for parents when preparing school lunches?

For 52% of parents, the main priority when preparing school lunches is the nutrition factor with ‘Food Children will enjoy’ coming in second place at 39%. The humble sandwich still holds pride of place at number one with 71% of those surveyed answering in its favour. ox inspiration,
