11 Ways to Keep Kids Entertained in the Car
We all know that kids often get bored, and the thought of a long car journey full of “are we there yet?”, bickering and whining is not pleasant for anyone!
Read our top tips for keeping the kids entertained – and leave your suggestions in the comments below.
Turn the trip into a treasure hunt
Make a list (in words or pictures) of the things you are bound to see on your journey – for example, 10 red cars, 2 white vans, a bridge, a toll booth, a boat, 10 road signs, a church, someone walking their dog, a yellow house, etc. Give your child the list and a marker or crayon to tick off all the things they’ve seen. Have a prize ready for when the whole list is completed!
Pick up some music or story CDs
Whether you have young toddlers who enjoy nursery rhymes and action songs, or older children who will enjoy to listen to their favourite books come to life, these CDs are a great addition to any car journey. Depending on the age of your child, you could load these onto an iPod or similar.
Little kids will enjoy this simple game. Everyone picks a different favourite colour, and then counts how many cars you pass of that colour – the ‘winner’ is the one who has seen the most of their colour car in a set time (this could be 5 minutes for young children, or the whole journey for older kids!)
Most of the classic board games come in portable travel versions with magnetised pieces that stick to the board, so there is less chance of losing crucial elements. Take the chance before your trip to make sure your kids understand how to play and have a few practice plays, so that they don’t get frustrated during the car journey.
Have a sing-along
Have your own little X Factor road trip competition with everyone taking turns, or just belt out some of your favourites and get the kids involved!
Create a treasure chest
If your journey is particularly long, look at preparing a treasure chest of small toys, treats and cheap fun items (for example, small toys, snacks, sticker or colouring books, etc) that you can dole out over the course of the trip.
Get snap happy!
Most kids love cameras. Give yours a disposable camera and encourage them to document your journey with things they see along the way.
