How Acupuncture Can Boost Your Fertility

Acupuncture is a popular method for trying to boost fertility. But how does it work? Fertility acupuncturist Linda Mara explains how the treatment could help a couple to conceive.

Acupuncture is one branch of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). TCM takes into consideration the mind, body and lifestyle circumstances (such as diet, exercise and stress levels) of a person. So, when you come in for acupuncture, your practitioner will probably give dietary and lifestyle advice, in addition to getting the treatment.

It’s more than needles

Fertility Acupuncture treatment is not just about needling, there is much more at play when treating infertility. The stresses and strains of trying to conceive over time can play a part in further hindering your chances of getting pregnant. This stress also varies in complexity from woman to woman, not to mention the underlying root causes of the fertility problem.

As a fertility acupuncturist, it is important that I look at this whole picture. Every person is unique and so are their circumstances. In all my years of experience, no two clients have ever come in with the same set of circumstances. So to get the best results, I take the time to get to know my patients and get to the root of the underlying issues.

What Happens During A Fertility Acupuncture Treatment?

If it’s your first appointment with me, you’ll be made comfortable in my clinic, and I’ll offer you a glass of water. Your first appointment is a unique opportunity for you to tell everything about your particular fertility situation, so that I can understand your particular circumstances.

During your initial consultation, I can easily spend up to an hour discussing your medical history, any blood work or fertility investigations you may have already had performed, your diet, exercise regime (or lack of), sleep, stress (I’m big on reducing stress). I especially want to hear the details of your menstrual cycle: The length, how many days bleed, any spotting, clots, colour of the bleed, pain, PMT symptoms, fertile cervical mucous etc. – no stone is left unturned!

A Tailored Plan

Knowing these details helps me to diagnose and formulate a treatment plan that personally suits you. It will also enable you to see that the fertility acupuncture is helping because soon after acupuncture treatment, you’ll start to see positive changes in your menstrual cycle even before you become pregnant. Whether you are trying to conceive naturally, with the help of an IVF clinic, or have had a diagnosis such as unexplained infertility, PCOS, Endometriosis, high FSH, low AMH, or suffered miscarriages; a fertility acupuncturist should treat your individual situation accordingly, and get you moving in the right direction with visible and measurable results.

Lifestyle Lowdown

After I get to know you and your situation, I’ll then take a look at your tongue and feel your pulse on both wrists. When I’m feeling your pulse I’m actually feeling for the quality of your pulse from a TCM perspective. This same TCM perspective applies to looking at your tongue. These techniques will help formulate your TCM diagnosis and treatment plan.

Next comes dietary and lifestyle advice as well as a schedule of acupuncture treatments. And finally, for the acupuncture treatment itself. I use hair thin needles that are sterile, single use, and disposable. There are many different acupuncture needling techniques, but when it comes to acupuncture for boosting fertility, the gentle technique is most effective. At this point you can simply lie there and rest.

After you’ve been resting for about 25 minutes I’ll gently wake you up and take the needles out. Everyone reacts differently to their first acupuncture treatment. Some people feel calm and relaxed while others get a boost of energy. At the next appointment, my patients often report that the night after receiving the acupuncture they had the best sleep they’ve had in a long time.

How Effective Is Fertility Acupuncture?

There are numerous studies, which show that the use of acupuncture contributes to not only reducing your stress levels and improving how you feel while trying to conceive, but also increases your chance of success. The most recent clinical study was conducted in 2016 by Homerton University Hospital, London. It found that receiving acupuncture during IVF doubles the success rate of the treatment.

How Can You Boost Your Fertility Right Now?

When it comes to boosting fertility, many factors can disrupt the delicate hormonal symphony that is required for building your lining, ovulation, fertilisation, implantation and pregnancy. My years of experience have taught me that in addition to getting acupuncture, the two main areas where you can make the most impact in boosting your fertility are diet and stress levels.

You may have been born with your eggs, but it’s the hormonal environment that causes them to mature. Hormones also play a large part in other vital areas such as the developing and thickening of your lining. The good news is that women make hormones from scratch, so we can most definitely impact their production. The raw ingredients your body uses to make reproductive hormones are the same ingredients your body uses to make the stress response hormones.

If you are under a lot of stress, it's good to remember the fact that the reproductive system is the only system in our body that does not keep us alive. The stress fight or flight response is meant to keep us alive. So, you need to make sure that you are getting enough raw materials to allow your body to make all the hormones it needs for all the jobs it needs to do. Increasing nutrition and reducing stress can both significantly help boost your fertility.
