Baby development week by week

2

Babies go through rapid growth during their first year. This means they go through some significant changes, and you can quickly see the changes in the baby’s development and behaviour. Remember each baby is unique and they will reach their own baby development and behaviour in their own time.

Baby Development Weeks

Weeks 1 – 10 Weeks 11 – 20 Weeks 21 – 30 Weeks 31 – 40 Weeks 41 – 52

Function

Babies are born with inborn reflexes and abilities. Some common examples would be breathing, regulating their body temperature, swallowing, suckling and, of course, crying. Although the hearing, taste and smell functions are present from birth, new born babies have normally very poor eyesight and it is not only the third month that their vision is much stronger.

Time Frame

The baby motor skills develop very quickly during the first year. By month 5, your baby should be able to use arms and legs to inch forward on their belly; and crawling begins between 8 and 10 months. Babies of between 4 and 7 months are normally able to grab hold of objects and move them from hand to hand.

Language

At around 6 months your baby will make many sounds as they begin to explore methods of communication. Crying is normally their way of communicating discomfort or a need. From sounds babbling will develop into repetitive syllables. As the 12 months approaches this then develops into more sophisticated sounds that begin to resembled a language. Most first words happen at around 12 months.

If you are worried that your baby is not reaching the baby milestones within the time zones suggested then contact your paediatrician to talk through the possibilities.

      Hi Kerryfan1,

All babies develop at different paces, and I’m sure your little one will be rolling over in no time. However, if you are concerned, mention it to your GP or district nurse. It’s better to get these things off your chest!
