Let's Talk About Postnatal Depression
Over 42,000 women are diagnosed with maternal mental illnesses in Ireland annually.
Maternal mental health issues; such as postnatal depression, postpartum psychosis, pregnancy anxiety and the baby blues; affect thousands of Irish women every day, yet there is still a taboo and a stigma around it. There's a stigma around talking about it and around seeking help and treatment for it.
There are 12,000 Irish women diagnosed annually with specifically postnatal depression. Because we've always been taught to keep these 'issues' private, among fears of 'what the neighbours might think', women are more than reluctant to talk about their maternal mental health issues.
The fear of speaking out and seeking treatment, means that so many women suffer in silence needlessly. With professional help, a woman really can feel well again. There is a sense of hope and light at the end of the tunnel.
That's why we want to shine a light on the topic of maternal mental illnesses in Ireland.
Together with our Maternal Mental Health Expert Irene Lowry, CEO of Nurture, we here at eumom want to remove the stigma of maternal mental illnesses and help women feel supported. Nurture is an Irish-registered nationwide charity offering counselling and supports to women, partners and families in Ireland. Nurture offers affordable, accessible counselling and supports surrounding post-natal depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, miscarriage, loss of a baby, infertility difficulties and much more.
