Baby’s Development – Week 21
As your baby develops into her fifth month, you will notice her becoming more independent and adventurous. She may be very happy to move around on her own and explore the world around her. Enjoy the little break this affords you – but do keep an eye on her and make sure your home is baby friendly.
At around this time, baby may show signs of a major emotional milestone – stranger anxiety, which can be linked to separation anxiety. She may become clingy and anxious around new people and perhaps cry if a stranger approaches her. Keep this in mind when friends and family are around. This period doesn’t mean you have to avoid new faces – but you’ll need to be patient and understanding during this stage of baby's development.
Your baby may now be strong enough to hold her own bottle as she feeds. But never prop the bottle for her and walk away, as this could cause baby to overeat or even choke. You may notice that showing more signs that she’s ready for solids – like a stronger tongue or an interest in the food that you and others are eating.
Your baby's physical development is coming on in leaps and bounds. She may now be able to get into a sitting position from her stomach by pushing up on her arms. If she is sitting independently, do stay nearby for support, or provide cushions for a possible fall.
