Baby’s Development – Week 18

Your baby is becoming stronger and stronger each week. You may even find that, by week 18, your baby can sit up unsupported for some time. If not, no need to worry, she will soon. Placing pillows at her sides to bolster her in this position may help her build the appropriate muscles, if she hasn’t already.

Exploring Objects

At this stage, your baby is learning now to entertain herself and will delight in playing with different toys. Encourage her to experiment and play with different toys, like a rattle, or even just a piece of cloth. An activity centre or a crib gym could be a good option to keep baby occupied at this stage.

Seeing Colours

Babies can see colours from birth, but find it hard to distinguish between similar tones. As a result younger babies will prefer high contrast patterns like black and white. But at this stage, differences between colours become clearer, and she will begin to distinguish between different colours. Feed this improved vision by showing your child a variety of colours in toys, books and clothes.

Baby Bookworm

Though they may not understand all the words, by now babies can recognise their native language; and are developing their understanding of sounds all the time. To nurture this, it's a great idea to read to baby: Something that you can both continue for years to come. Though this is a fun bonding activity at any time, it can be an invaluable part of their sleep routine.
