Baby’s Development – Week 16
Congratulations, your baby is 4 months old this week! By now, she’s alert, energetic and ready to explore. At this stage, she sees many colours and can focus well on objects. She is aware of many sounds and screeches playfully, just to hear her own voice. She should be able to lift her torso while on her tummy and can reach objects easily. Life is becoming lots more fun for baby around now!
By now, baby is becoming much stronger and more agile. At this time, she needs some time on her tummy every day to strengthen her neck, arm and chest muscles, all essential for crawling. Try lying down on the floor with her and moving around to encourage her to follow.
Tips on Nutrition
You may be tempted to start your baby on solids around now. But breast milk or formula feeds provide all of your baby’s nutritional needs at this time. It’s advisable to wait until 6 months to start your baby on solids, as she is better equipped to digest and avoid allergies and infections from food. You can supplement your baby’s diet with a daily Vitamin D drop – ask your pharmacist for advice.
Is your baby teething?
In most cases, baby’s first tooth spouts at around the 6 month mark. But it’s not uncommon to see a white cap before then. If your baby appears to be in pain and drools a lot, it could be a sign that a tooth is on the way.
