An Open Letter to the Girl at the Supermarket...
"I had to run to the shop today to get milk. I took a quick look at myself in the mirror before I got out of the car. "God, the state of me..."
I thought to myself. Hair that hadn't been brushed, wearing a Christmas jumper and a pair of jeans covered in 50 shades of baby puke, and as for makeup? What the hell is that anymore?! "Well, that's what having four kids and three that are under two and a half does to you!", I thought.
So I jumped out and ran in, grabbed the milk and ran to the tills. Said a quick hello to the girl, ..not wanting to make eye contact for fear of scaring the crap out of her with the state of me.
Then I heard her talking... "I love your hair!", she said. I looked over my shoulder to see who she was talking to while imagining a girl with lovely perfect hair... but there was nobody.
I looked up at her. "Me? My hair?!", I said. "Yes, you!! It's gorgeous! I love the colour. I would love to have hair like yours."
In shock, I went on to tell her how it hadn't been brushed since the day before yesterday and she went on to compliment me again. I walked out of the shop with the biggest smile! She had made my day!
In this time of my life where I literally don't have a second to think about myself, this one girl complimenting my hair made ALL the difference. These tough days will not last forever... I will soon have time to worry about my hair and makeup again. So, for now, I will muddle through the madness as best I can and learn to not be so hard on myself.
So thank you, "Girl at the supermarket", you didn't know that I've had one of the toughest weeks of my life, but your compliment has meant more to me than you could ever know.
