5 Tips for Minding Baby’s Skin
The skin on our bodies is our biggest and most delicate organ and should be managed with great care. A baby's skin is very sensitive and should be treated delicately. So while it may be tempting to lather your baby in all of the new and beautiful smelling products which you have purchased or have been gifted, take a moment to ponder these 5 tips:
1. Do your research
Do you really know what these products contain? Could they be harmful to your baby's skin? Could they irritate or dry out the skin and make your baby uncomfortable? Look at reviews online and see what other parents have said. And as a rule of thumb, always try to go for products that are fragrance free.
2. Test on skin
This really is a rule that we should all apply. It's worth doing a small patch test on the skin to make sure it won't irritate or dry out the skin. 24 hours in advance, just pop a little bit of the product on baby's wrist or ankle and monitor it for any changes.
3. Don't overdo it
It can be tempting to use fancy shampoos and different moisturisers to have your baby smelling great and feeling silky smooth, but do you really need them? Try not to go over the top with products. Stick with a good moisturiser and bath wash.
4. Quick Baths
Speaking of baths, try to shorten the length of time spent in them! While we might think that we are helping baby stay clean and fresh by giving them a nice long relaxing bath every day, what we are actually doing is drying out the skin by over exposure to water. Try to cut down the daily bath to just a few minutes. Keep it short and sweet by limiting the time spent in water. "Get into the habit of moisturising your baby's skin every day, ideally after a short bath. Use gentle, fragrance and alcohol free products to keep baby's skin soft and nourished.", says Katherine Eve, Skin Care Specialist.
