Hi all,

I went into labour on the 10/07/10. My twin boys were born at 28+6 weeks weighing 2 lbs 5oz and 2lbs 10 ozs. They are in NICU and are likely to remain there for the next 8-10 weeks until they reach a healthy weight. Am just wondering if anybody has had a similar experience? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! The boys are just 10 days old and have already been through blood transfusions and have had minor bleeds on their brain...from talking to consultant and from what I have read such problems are relatively normal in the life of a premature baby..

Any tips wouldbe greatly appreciated. These are my first babies so am a worried first time mum multiplied by at least a hundred!!!

Thanks!!

Hi twinem,

congratulations on your boys. Its a difficult time and a very strange environment to be in, especially when its your first. I have had two premature babies so I know exactly what you are going through at the minute, so many of us do.

Through Irish Premature Babies , I can link you up with a buddy or friend who has had a baby or babies at the same gestation as you, you can talk on the phone or even email each other, which is easier, when you are in the NICU all day.

If it is something you would like just email me ( Allison)

irishprematurebabies@gmail.com.

Hi twinem,

Congratulations first of all!

Typing here with a baby in my arms asleep so excuse the spelling etc!

I'm sorry to hear what you are going through with your babies, I hope they are doing well in the Nic unit now you are a few weeks on.

My b/g twins were born at 28+4 in February (waters broke at 27 wks and lasted 10 days in hospital) so I know exactly what you are going through so I hope I can help. Both were on ventilators, then cpap, had collapsed lungs, minor brain bleeds and blood transfusions etc. Much of which is so common with premies. All i can say is that I know how hard it is to head in and out of the nic unit every day. Mine were in for 7 weeks and are 22 weeks old now and are thriving. They are my first babies too.

Please pm me if you want to chat or if I can help. I hope you and your babies are doing ok xx

Hi twinem,

Congtrats on your latest arrivals!!

I've just brough my little girl home from NICU after 7 and a half weeks. She was 29+6 when she was born and just under 3lbs. Her identical sister died in the womb, hence my emergency section.

My little one had 2 blood transfusions and was intubated and on c-pap for quite some time. It's perfectly normal for them to have up days and down days, but I promise you there will be more up than down and the hospitals are amazing. I couldn't fault the staff and their ability to take care of my girl. They always explained everything to me and whilst it was scary seeing her with all the tubes and wires I knew she would pull through.

She is 5lb now and we are so happy to have her home. The next few weeks will be very tough emotionally and will also be very tiring, but I promise you it will all work out in the end. Our babies are such fighters, they really are xx

Hi Little Miss K,

Sorry for the late reply, has been a full time job in the hospital! The boys are doing well now thank god! The first few weeks were tough with all the problems but the last two weeks they have made incredible progress. They are now 3 lbs 13 and 3 lbs 10 oz and will soon be moved into cots. Hoping it won't be too long before we get them home.

I hope your little girl is well and settling in at home.

Best of luck with everything- I chatted to you a few times on the twin thread and was following your story. Was very sad to hear that your other girl had passed away and think you are amazing for coping so well :)
